The Nationwide Series rolled into Darlington yesterday for the Royal Purple 200, putting on a Friday night race for the second weekend in a row. And for guys like me who live on the West Coast, the race was practically over before we got home from our Friday night commute from the desk job.
As I turned the TV to get an update on the race I thought to myself, “I bet Kyle Busch is winning”.
I was wrong, well sort of. He had already won.
The moment I flipped over to ESPN2 I saw Mr. Busch doing victory donuts and antics that are done so often that it almost has become a cliché. The donuts, the bow, the splash of NOS energy drink in Victory lane, the boos from the crowd. We’ve seen it so many times.
But what Kyle Busch is doing isn’t a cliché, it’s just flat-out ridiculous! And this is demonstrated by the fact that Busch has nearly caught Mark Martin on the Nationwide all-time winners’ list, doing it in a time period that is mind boggling.
Think about this: Mark Martin won his 49th race just this year in Las Vegas, and after starting his career in 1982 he won first Nationwide race in 1987. Folks, in 1987 Kyle Busch was just two years old.
Kyle Busch has amassed 48 wins since he began his Nationwide career in 2003, and is on track to obliterate Mark Martin’s record if he continues to do the NASCAR double-header weekends. And while it can be boring watching him win week after week, I find it interesting to watch this “freak of racing” do his thing.
